Prohibition in the 1920's

During the 1920's, there was a new thing called 'Prohibition'. It began on January 16, 1920. Prohibition made it illegal, or restricted the sale, manufacture, transportation, import, and exporting of alcoholic beverages.

Why Prohibition?

The government thought that taking away alcohol from Americans would be for the greater good. Prohibition was supposed to help lower the crime rates, mend social problems, and improve the overall health of Americans.

What Happened?

Taking away alcohol from America was a good idea, but it's something that just didn't work. Eventually, organized crime exploded into business in the cities of America. Instead of lowering the crime rate, it began to raise rapidly. More and more court and prison systems were filling up and becoming overloaded. 'Speakeasies' erupted all over America. These were just illegal underground drinking bars, were people got rich off of thirsty American citizens. This was a huge place for cops to crack down.
